with the biggest problems. number one, of course, california. we want to credit 247 wall street just naming california and the worst run state in all of the country. for a second year row. way to go. one of the reasons is the unemployment rate, a pretty impressive. 11%. the second highest rate in the country. 2006 and last year. more than a third. and 16 percent of the population in california, 16 percent of the population lives below the poverty line in the golden state. that's not all. forbes magazine, one of the worst spiral states. forbes came up with that great nomenclature. the death spiral state. named 11 of them. california right at the top. for every 100 private sector workers in california, for every hundred working in the private sector california has only 139 people dependent upon it for their employment, welfare in some fashion. so how are they doing that in california? obviously they're not. stay voters just passed a ballot initiative that will raise sales tax and income tax for people who make at least $250,000 per year. don't worry about it. by the way, that was after the ta

are going to sort of wall about the points, and california is the big enchilada. safely democratic for years. ronald reagan to win the state. fifty-five electoral votes go for barack obama. north carolina, this is a pickup for mitt romney from what had been a democratic win four years ago. mitt romney, as he did in indiana tonight, when speck of state for the republicans. still in doubt is virginia when they are still counting the votes. florida when they're still counting the votes. simply too close to call. idaho, i think i mistakenly said that was expected to go for the presidents. i was wrong. mitt romney picks up by no and its four electoral votes. going to washington state, this was a state that the president was expected to win. he picks up those 12 electoral votes out of washington. and as we look at hawaii, the president's old state, for electoral votes, little doubt that this was going to happen. barack obama when so why. a great deal of fuss. don't know if that was true. sort of a fallback. no need. at this point he's on route to looking pretty good, but we will see in virginia. g

, the northeast, up in detroit your, the west coast, california, uc president's support. the red, of course, is romney support. take a look at the map of the unemployed. there are some similarities. lots of unemployed in mature areas and centers. california, concentrations of unemployed and also here on the east coast and down into florida. here is what is interesting. republicans made the assumption incorrectly, as it turns out, the voters in states with high unemployment would kick the bums out. obama out of office to try to find somebody who would solve the jobs problem in this country it turns out the opposite happened. take a look at this map. can we go back? thank you. so, if you let one map over the other, they are the same essentially command it is surprising because essentially the republicans that the people would come as i said to of both the bonds out and it did not happen that way. the reason, if you think about it, obvious, the federal government is paying the jobless, extending them unemployed benefits, food stamps, even underwriting disability payments from social security.

more issues on about last night. first cup, a tax proposed by governor jerry brown in california, tax increase. wouldn't you know, president -- residents of the formerly golden state voted for governor brown's proposition, proposition 13. they are going to get a tax increase. michigan, voters rejected a proposal that would have changed the constitution and guarantee employees the right to organize and collectively bargain. a loss for the unions in michigan. colorado, they voted for the use and regulation of marijuana recreation league. 53-46. more on that with the judge who is celebrating this.com. he is libertarian. we want to dig deeper on these numbers from yesterday. from the exit poll president obama won the latino vote overwhelmingly, 71-47. along with the conventional wisdom was this would be closer. even a tie but the president won by 11 points. young voters under age 30, 60% for the president, 37% for romney. joining us, the marist institute for public opinion. welcome back. i was wrong in all three areas. latinos, women and youth. why -- not why, but why was i so wrong. >> y
